Social Studies / Science

Well we are moving on to a new teacher, Mrs. Todd, she started in our room on Tuesday.  She will be teaching the children geography in social studies and states of matter in science.  The kids have already started a project where they have put the continents onto paper to create a map.  Through this project they learned words like: hemisphere and equator.

REMINDER - NO SCHOOL FRIDAY AND MONDAY!!!

Homework was assigned Monday and due next Tuesday.  They will receive a new homework sheet on Tuesday of next week, which will be due the following Monday.

 LANGUAGE ARTS

In reading we are continuing to work on our non-fiction unit.  So far we have discovered how text features can help us navigate our way through non-fiction reading.  We have discovered that author's write non-fiction text with different purposes and main ideas in mind.  A way to help us through this is through text mapping.  The kids have worked with all the text maps, but now we are trying to apply the knowledge we learned.  We are realizing that text mapping requires reading, reading, and more reading of the same sections of text.

In writing we are wrapping up non-fiction writing unit.  The kids will be finishing their glossaries this week.  As well as beginning peer editing.  Next week we will be revising and publishing.  We will then be working on some grammar items as well as poems the rest of the year.

In Spelling the kids received their words for this week and will be taking their test tomorrow.  They will also be receiving their new words for next week because of no school on Monday.  Their test for that list will be next Friday.

MATH

We are on to our big numbers unit.  I am asking parents to please open your minds to new approaches during this unit. We have worked on addition and are in the subtraction portion of the unit.  One of the goals of this unit is to have kids see the correlation between addition and subtraction.  Many of the kids have discovered that a way to subtract is through using addition, some have stuck to the traditional method, and some are choosing to use partial difference method.  It's so neat to see and hear all the different and great thinking that is going on this classroom.

We are teaching kids that the traditional method is not always the most efficient.  We are asking them to examine each individual problem and really come up with a plan for what would be most efficient before jumping right into the traditional method.
